GPS Mapping
Get to know this beautiful part
of Brazil while you work
|
With our GIS we
are working towards getting a clear idea of what the state
of the biodiversity conservation is in the local area. However
if we don't have any information to feed into the GIS then
it can't do any of this. We have commissioned a set of aerial
photographs which enables us to get a snapshot of the area
- this information gets fed in to a number of our programs
- land use planning, forest
corridors and many more projects besides.
This in itself isn't enough, to get more
information we have to go out into the field, up the mountain,
across the river, down the lane and through a waterfall
to get more points, which leads to more information to feed
in to our GIS.

Current priorities
- Collecting data for the Territory GIS;
- Carrying out ground-truthing work to ensure that the land
uses we have identified match up with what is on the land.
- Helping other volunteers not familiar in mapping to record the geographical information about their work - such as recording points of sample collection, animal sightings, etc.
Skills and expertise needed
- Physically fit
- Technically proficient
- Enjoy outdoor work
- A scientific background would be an advantage for some of
the projects we need mapped
Time frames
As this is a very outdoor role it is one that can really only
be done in the dry season, from the beginning of April to the
end of September.
Project update
|
Using horses, motorbikes, and foot power
vast tracts of the area covered by the aerial photography
have been visited, and points collected. These points
are being used to geo-reference the aerial photographs
we have commissioned.
We are also working on standardising
the information we collect with each point, so that in
the future we will be sure that the historical data is
of the same standard, or at least be clear what the differences
are.
