iracamb1: Back home after a great time in Rio. And now it's time to write that book. No excuses, adelante!

Wooly Spider Monkey Habitat

His name is the wooly spider monkey, known as muriqui (Brachyteles hypoxanthus,) and he’s not only the largest and arguably the most handsome of the new world primates, he’s also severely endangered through habitat destruction. In fact scientists reckon that the population of northern muriquis may have been reduced to as few as 1000. And most of them live in the Serra do Brigadeiro mountains, right here at Iracambi.

So here’s our plan. We’re working with friends and partners to set up private forest reserves on seven strategic areas of unprotected forest bordering the park, to secure habitat for the muriqui – together with a lot of other endangered species. By law, private reserves are inviolable for ever, and out of the seven high priority plots, three are already under conservation management. We created our own reserve at Iracambi in 1999, and thanks to a generous donation from the International Union for the Conservation of Nature we have recently acquired another forest area which we are in the process of putting under permanent protection. When the rains come in October we’ll be able to start some reforesting in the new reserve.muriqui_habitat

We’ve now discovered that the adjacent plot is for sale, and we are moving heaven and earth to raise the $50,000 that it will cost to buy and conserve it. This photo, taken from the plot we just bought, shows the the land we're taiking about, and the forest in the Park on the far right. Here’s how you can help: check out the proposal, and ask all your friends and relations to hit the donation button on our site and help us secure a safe home for the cutest monkey in our neck of the woods!

Junior Scientists @ Iracambi

Junior Scientists @ Iracambi is our exciting new program of Environmental Education that transforms schoolchildren in Brazil’s Atlantic Rainforest into forest guardians. Through hands-on education they learn the science of forestry, collect data on soils and water, and share their discoveries with their families, gaining a new understanding of the forest as a resource to be nurtured and not exploited.

So what's the problem?

One of the world's top five biodiversity hotspots, the Atlantic Rainforest is a place of extraordinary beauty and a treasure house of biodiversity. Tragically, much of its immense variety of flora and fauna is severely endangered by habitat loss - 93% of the Atlantic Rainforest has vanished. Unsustainable agricultural practices result in erosion, loss of soil fertility, low crop yields, over-grazing, and strain on water resources, leading to a vicious cycle of rural poverty and deforestation.

What's the solution?

We work with school children to make tree seedlings, plant and care for young trees, track changes in forest cover and water quality, share the results with their families, and promote new ways of conservation farming that bring money to poor farmers.

Potential Long Term Impact

While the fate of the rainforest affects us all, its future depends largely on those who live in it. Junior Scientists @ Iracambi aims to equip 400 schoolchildren with the tools they need to understand the connection between restoring forests, protecting soils and water, and living better. Through developing knowledge, skills and ability in the the younger generation we train future forest guardians to share with their parents opportunities that they themselves never had.

A project with a difference

Junior Scientists @ Iracambi is our first project to be funded through crowdsourcing. Our goal is to raise $12,000 and we're almost there. We've also managed to leverage an additional grant of $3000 to cover transport and snacks for hungry junior scientists, AND we've received the generous donation of equpment for water monitoring.
