Environmental Protection Areas

Iracambi's privileged location in the buffer zone of the Serra do Brigadeiro State Park gives us a huge incentive to ensure that valuable forest patches are protected and linked to one another and also to the core conservation area of the Park. Brazilian law recognizes Environmental  Protection Areas, established at county level, as conservation areas eligible to receive "green dollars" in exchange for good conservation practises. The county of Rosario da Limeira has two EPAs, which are areas of farm and forest land which are under recognized and approved conservation management. Iracambi works to help county government set up and manage conservation areas in five of the nine counties of the Serra do Brigadeiro. To do this we conduct participatory rural assessments in the proposed conservation areas, during which we identify threatened forest and water resources, do community land mapping, generate maps on the I-GIS and return to the communities so that together we can understand the importance of protecting the natural resources and decide on the best ways to protect them.
