Forest Corridors

Studies of survival of forest islands - island biogeography - show the correlation between the size of the forest fragment and the length of time that its biodiversity will survive. This relationship varies from one locality to another, but one study has shown that in a 100 ha forest island, reducing the area by 10% will cause 13% of the species to be lost in 50 years, while 15% loss of area cause a 40% loss of species.
Iracambi's forest corridor project is designed to reconnect forest fragments, increase habitat, protect existing forests and restore their health. Since forest corridors are planted on private lands there are two major considerations - creating habitat for pollinating and seed dispersing fauna and including fruit or fuelwoods tree along with the native species trees so that the forest corridors will contribute to farm economy.
Under the Bolsa Verde scheme of payment by government to farmers who reforest stream banks and steep hillsides, mixtures of native and non-native species can be planted, as well as agroforestry with native species and agricultural crops. Iracambi can also help by supplying seedlings from our forest nursery.
